Tropical Storm Elsa moving toward Florida, expected to arrive Tuesday
The storm is expected to bring strong winds and heavy rain to the Southeast this week.
HOUSTON — Tropical Storm Elsa continues to make its way toward Florida. At 10 p.m. Sunday, the storm was about 270 miles southeast of Havana, Cuba, according to the National Hurricane Center. It was moving northwest at about 15 mph.
Elsa is expected to reach Cuba late Sunday night. It’s expected to hit the Florida Keys early Tuesday before moving over the west coast of Florida on Wednesday.
Winds
The storm is producing winds of about 65 mph, with higher gusts. It’s expected to get stronger before it gets to Cuba, but then will weaken when it gets over the island. It’s possible that Elsa could regain some strength as it moves over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico.
Rainfall expectations
The NHC said the storm could produce about 2 to 4 inches of rain and possibly up to 6 inches in parts of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Tornadoes are possible in southern Florida on Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning.
